This release updates the forecasts from our March report, Household Rental Debt During COVID-19: Update for 2021, with actual employment data through June. We estimate that, as a result of pandemic-related economic hardship, nearly 2 million renter households will owe over $15 billion in back rent and utilities by August 2021.
The release provides estimates of rental debt prior to the distribution of emergency rental assistance. These estimates can help shed light on the extent to which rental assistance distributed thus far has addressed the needs of the most financially distressed households. Rental debt estimates for August 2021 are broken down by state.
