Philadelphia — The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia announced today that Skander Van den Heuvel will become executive vice president and director of research, effective November 1.
Since 2008, Van den Heuvel has been a research leader and economist at the Federal Reserve Board. He currently serves as senior associate director of the Division of Financial Stability, overseeing Financial Institutions Risk Evaluation and Financial and Macroeconomic Stability Studies.
As executive vice president and director of research at the Philadelphia Fed, Van den Heuvel will lead the Research and Financial Statistics departments and the Consumer Finance Institute, serve as the chief economic advisor to President and CEO Anna Paulson, provide counsel on the economic outlook and monetary policymaking, attend meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee, and serve on the Bank’s Executive Leadership Team.

Van den Heuvel began his career with the Federal Reserve Board as an economist, rising through progressively senior leadership roles across Research and Statistics, Financial Stability, and Supervision and Regulation. From 2015 to 2017, he served a two-year temporary assignment as a research advisor in the European Central Bank’s Directorate General Research. Prior to joining the Fed, Van den Heuvel was assistant professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
He has a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University and completed his undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. His research spans both applied and theoretical topics in banking regulation, capital and liquidity requirements, interest rate risk, monetary policy transmission, and financial stability. Van den Heuvel’s research has been published in the Journal of Finance; Journal of Monetary Economics; Journal of Money, Credit and Banking; and International Journal of Central Banking.
