This one-day professional development program introduces elementary school teachers to methods for teaching personal finance topics such as choices, wants, costs and benefits, money, saving, spending, and banking basics using the Financial Fitness for Life lesson book for grades 3–5. Lessons demonstrated in the program will address the following essential questions:

  • How does our education influence our income?
  • What's scarcity and why does it make us have to choose?
  • What's opportunity cost?
  • Why do we choose to save?
  • How does interest provide an incentive for us to save?
  • How can a savings plan help us reach our goals?
  • Why is comparison shopping a useful skill?
  • How can a budget help us manage income and expenses?

Taught by Federal Reserve economic educators, this program emphasizes active- and collaborative-learning teaching methods that help elementary school teachers meet state and national standards in personal finance, social studies, family and consumer sciences, and business education. Participants will receive 6.5 hours of professional development credit (Act 48 in Pennsylvania for certified teachers), continental breakfast, lunch, a $25 gift card, and a copy of the Financial Fitness for Life, Grades 3–5 teaching materials.
