The opioid crisis has multiple and complex dimensions, as its evolution over the last few decades has demonstrated. Despite this complexity, we can safely conclude that the crisis has negative economic outcomes; it has become less driven by opioid prescriptions, thanks to the many state laws and regulations targeting the supply and prescription of opioids; and designing effective policies that curb the demand for opioids remains a challenge.
